Drivers License……Insulin Dep…bright red and on the front!!!
Posted on: Sunday, August 17th, 2008 at 7:36 amI happened to pull out my Fla drivers license the other day and noted the Insulin Dep in bright red on the front of my license. I remember a few years back when they started putting it on the licenses and it kinda bothered me back then. I know why they do it….low, in an accident, driving erratically, save my life….all that kinda stuff. But I really am not all that thrilled handing it to some clerk somewhere and having them see it.
I dont try to hide my D, but I don’t go around telling people I don’t know about it either. I wonder how if you had cancer, or a brain tumor, or HIV and had it listed on your license…how would people feel?
I guess it is what it is, but it still kinda irks me…..Oh well,,,control what you can and understand what you cant control….and no worries….

I have never heard of that..do other states do that too? That wouldn’t just annoy me,it would send me off the deep end. Cop pulls you over, asks for your lisence, and immediately assumes you’re having some sort of diabetes crises. I much prefer to have medical body identification on me + leave my license out of it, pigeon holing me into the “irresponsible diabetic” slot any time I run a red,etc. or go out for drinks(and get ID’d) would be a nightmare, to me.

I’m in Washington State, and we don’t have it on our licenses. I think it varies from state to state.

Missouri doesn’t have it. And I agree with Anonymous’ comment about being pigeon holed into things. I would be mortified if I went to a bar and the bartender asked for my ID and saw that I was type 1 and then didn’t make me a drink because he didn’t think that diabetics should drink. The state should let us make that decision of whether we want to broadcast the disease or not. Just like the bartender should let me make the decision of whether or not I should have a drink.

I have no problem letting people know that I have diabetes, I am proud of it. I think that with having it on my driver’s license could potentially save a life. If you pass out and don’t have any type of identification of your diabetes, you could be in a world of harm. I think in order to fight this disease we all need to stand up together, take the syringes, needles, pumps, lancets, strips, from behind closed doors and say, “Yea, I have diabetes, so what, I control it. it doesn’t control my life!”

It’s not that it’s a big secret for me or anything, but isn’t this a gross violation of HIPAA?
